Fish Status

BLUEGILL

Good

Poor numbers of bluegill were collected from Little Cache #1 Lake during the 2021 survey, as evidenced by an electrofishing catch-per-unit-effort of 74 fish per hour. Sixty percent of these fish were larger than 6 inches, while 26% were over 7 inches in length. Bluegill body condition exceeds the management plan goal.

LARGEMOUTH BASS

Good

Largemouth bass were collected in Little Cache #1 Lake at a rate of 52 per hour in spring 2021, and 76% were larger than 12 inches, while 43% were longer than the 15-inch minimum size limit. Bass body condition was good and still improving.

REDEAR SUNFISH

Fair

Redear were substantially less abundant in 2021, as evidenced by an electrofishing catch-per-unit-effort of 30 per hour. 53% of these fish were larger than 6 inches, and 7% exceeded the 8 inch mark. Redear body condition is good, but at the lower end of the management plan goal range.

WHITE CRAPPIE

Fair

In 2021, Little Cache #1 Lake white crappie were collected at a much higher rate of the previous year (28/hr). Crappie condition remained substandard.

Location: Little Cache #1 Lake is a relatively shallow, 21-acre, U.S. Forest Service-owned water body located approximately five miles north-northeast of Vienna, IL in Johnson County.

Description: The lake was formed by impounding Little Cache Creek and has a large watershed for its size, so significant rains have the potential to quickly raise the water level and decrease transparency.

Additional Lake Information: 2 pole and line fishing only. Little Cache #1 Lake has a gravel access road and primitive boat ramp.

Site Regulations:

Largemouth bass: 15 inch minimum length limit
Channel catfish: 6 fish daily limit
