Fish Status

BLUEGILL

Poor

This population is poor. The relative weights are excellent, but no fish were collected over 7”. The largest Bluegill sampled in 2020 measured 6.6”. In lakes where Gizzard Shad are present Bluegill tend to exhibit slow growth due to competition for food resources.

CHANNEL CATFISH

Improving

13 Channel Catfish were collected in 2020, ranging from 9.7-15.7”. Six Channel Catfish were collected in 2019, ranging from 11.0-19.7”, and the largest weighed 2.4lbs. Non-vulnerable Channel Catfish were stocked 8/6/2020 and 8/14/2018.

CRAPPIE

Poor

19 White Crappie were collected in 2020, measuring 4.1-11.5”. Two White Crappie were collected in 2019. The 2019 White Crappie measured 9.8” and 10.6”. 20 Black Crappie were collected in 2020, ranging from 3.5-9.5”. One Black Crappie was collected in 2019. It measured 8.3”. Mean relative weights for Black Crappie (Wr=86) and White Crappie (Wr=84.3) are poor.

FLATHEAD CATFISH

Developing

108 Flathead Catfish ranging from 3.5”-45.4” were stocked from 8/14-16/2019. The largest fish weighed 49.5lbs. 49 of the 108 fish were given a Floy-Tag and PIT-Tag to track recapture, growth, and harvest. Two Flathead Catfish were collected during the fall 2019 electrofishing survey. Flathead Catfish #23448 measured 14.1” when it was stocked on 8/14/2019 and 15.7” on 9/26/2019 when it was collected in the fall survey. The second Flathead Catfish collected measured 9.1” and was one of the unmarked fish that was released in August 2019. No Flathead Catfish were collected in the fall 2020 electrofishing survey. Future Flathead Catfish stockings will be conducted as time allows. Anglers are asked to report tagged fish to the phone number listed on the tag. Information such as date of catch, species, length and weight of the fish, and whether or not the fish was harvested will be requested.

LARGEMOUTH BASS

Poor

The fall 2020 survey resulted in a lower catch rate of Largemouth Bass (CPUE=12) compared to 2019 (CPUE=26). In 2020, Largemouth Bass ranged from 4.9-17.5” and weighed up to 3.48lbs. On 8/6/2020, 2,846 4” Largemouth Bass were stocked by the IDNR Hatchery. Fish collected in 2019 ranged from 6.3-22.0” and weighed up to 5.7lbs.

Location: Waverly Lake is in Morgan County, 3 miles northwest of Waverly, and 23 miles southwest of Springfield.

Description: The Division of Fisheries entered into a formal Cooperative Management Agreement with the City of Waverly in 1984. The lake is 119 acres and is mostly surrounded by hardwood timber offering an abundance of submerged snags and stumps for fish habitat. The lake has one boat ramp on the south side of the lake on Waverly Lake Road.

History and Status of the Sport Fishery: Other species collected during the population survey included Black Bullhead, Common Carp, Freshwater Drum, Green Sunfish, Gizzard Shad, Yellow Bullhead, and Yellow Bass. 28 catfish spawning tubes were installed on 12/10/2020 to encourage better Flathead Catfish reproduction.

Two pole and line fishing only and each pole must not have more than 2 hooks or lures attached while fishing. Sport fishermen may take carp, carpsuckers, buffalo, gar, bowfin and suckers by pitchfork, gigs, bow and arrow or bow and arrow devices.
