Fish Status

Very Good

Bluegill were collected from Herrin #1 Lake during the 2016 survey at a lesser rate compared to the previous year, but the quality of these fish increased compared to the previous year. Of bluegill sampled, 86% were over 6 inches (greatly exceeding the management plan goal), while 54% were larger than 7 inches in length. Bluegill body condition was also excellent.

Four channel catfish were collected per hour of electrofishing during the 2016 survey, which was down from 14 per hour in the previous year. These fish ranged from 19 to 26 inches in length, and their condition was excellent. The channel catfish population is maintained by stocking every other year. Site Regulation: 6 per day creel limit.

Only a few white and black crappie were included in the spring 2016 sample. Crappie ranged in size from 9 to 12 inches, and white crappie displayed substandard body condition, while black crappie condition was excellent.

Quantity and quality of largemouth bass in Herrin #1 Lake were somewhat reduced in spring 2016 compared to the previous year. Of those sampled, 34% were over 12 inches, which did not make the management plan goal, and 13% were larger than the lake’s 15 inch minimum length limit. Bass body condition increased slightly and entered the goal range. Site Regulation: 15" length limit and 3 per day creel limit.

Redear were much less abundant than bluegill again in 2016. Size range of these fish was 5.5 to 8 inches, and body condition was excellent.

Location: Herrin #1 Lake is located on the southwest edge of Herrin, Illinois in Williamson County.

Description: Herrin #1 Lake is a 60-acre city-owned impoundment. The lake is partially surrounded by homes and a golf course and has an improved boat ramp. A fairly significant oxygen-related fish kill occurred in Herrin #1 Lake in September 2010, and the fish community has rebounded well.
