Fish Status

The bluegill population is poor. No bluegill over 8 inches have ever been collected from this lake. In 2016 the largest bluegill collected was 7 inches. Site Regulation: 25 fish daily limit.

The channel catfish population is average. No catfish were collected during the 2016 spring trap netting survey. Channel catfish have been collected in 2 of the last 4 surveys. Site Regulation: 6 fish daily limit.

Blue Wing Lake has an excellent crappie population consisting of both black and white crappie. Of the 42 crappie collected in the 2016 spring trap netting survey, 97% were over 9 inches, and 74% were over 10 inches in length. Site Regulation: 25 fish daily limit.

Striped bass hybrids (4-5 inches) were stocked for the first time into this lake in September of 2015.

An electrofishing survey is the best way to analyze the largemouth bass population in a lake. Because electrofishing is not an option at this lake, very little is known about the largemouth population at this lake. One largemouth (16 inches) was collected in the 2016 spring trap netting survey. Site Regulation: Creel limit of 5 fish under 14" and one fish over 18"; there is a protected slot of 14–18" (no possession).

Location: Pyramid State Park is located south of Pinckneyville in Perry County. From State Route 127 head west on Pyatt-Cutler Road. About 7 miles west of Pyramid State Park turn south into the Denmark Section.

Description: Blue Wing Lake is a strip cut lake located on the Denmark Section of Pyramid State Park. Facilities at this 35-acre lake include a concrete boat launch, floating dock and bathrooms.

History and Status of the Sport Fishery: As a result of high water conductivity, electrofishing is not an effective sampling tool at this lake. All information is based on spring trap netting surveys.

Additional Lake Information: 2 pole and line fishing only and bowfishing is allowed. From November 1 through February 28 fishing is allowed in designated areas only, and fishing hours are from ½ hour before sunrise to 2 PM.

Note: A new horsepower rule went into effect February of 2018: Unlimited HP motor limit and all boats/motors must be operated at no wake speed.
