Fish Status



The 2014 collection of Bluegill is low due to the structure of the impoundment. These fish ranged from 2” to 7” and weighed up to .26 lbs. 10% were at least 6” and 2% exceeded 7” in size.


Very Good

This lake has always been solid for this species. In 2014, we boated cats measuring from 14” to 21” and topping the scale at 2.6 lbs. 50% reached 1 lb., while 5% topped 2 lbs. in total weight.



Our fall 2014 survey captured bass measureing from 3” to 19.5” and weighing up to 4 lbs. 35% attained 12”, 8% reached 15”, and 3% topped 18” in total length. This body of water has always been difficult to sample due to its steep sided shoreline. Since 1994, we have never collected a good sample size of bass, despite IDNR-Fisheries stocking this lake with bass several times. The

Location: Palmyra-Modesto Water Commission Lake is located 1 mile east and one half mile north of Palmyra, IL in northwestern Macoupin County.

Description: Palmyra-Modesto Water Commission Lake is the water supply for both communities. This water body was constructed in 1965, and is primarily used to fish by the recreational public. The lake is 35 acres with a shoreline length of 2.9 miles, watershed size of,697 acres, a maximum depth of 31 feet, and an average depth of 12.2 feet. Palmyra-Modesto Water Commission Lake has a trolling motor only motor size limit. There is a single, gravel ramp on the northwest end of the water body. There are picnic facilities across the road to the west at Terry Park.

History and Status of the Sport Fishery: Approximately 13 distinct species reside in this impoundment. This lake receives periodic stockings of 8” to 10” channel catfish via IDNR-Fisheries.
