Species

Fish Status

BLUEGILL

Fair

The bluegill population declined slightly for the first time in three years. No bluegill greater than 8” were collected, however 12.5% were greater than 7”. Body condition fell to just below the target level. Fishing in the coming year should be fair, with most keepers 6” – 8” in length and 0.25 – 0.33 lbs. Site Regulation: 25 fish/day.

CHANNEL CATFISH

Good

Catfish numbers remain low in East Fork Lake, but the average size of the fish is exceptional. Most fish will range from 3 – 10 pounds with larger fish up to 15 pounds common. Body condition of these fish is excellent. This lake provides some good bank fishing opportunities. Drift fishing the main lake is also very productive. Site Regulation: 6 fish/day.

LARGEMOUTH BASS

Good

The size structure of the bass population improved slightly for the second consecutive year. The catch per effort rose significantly. Data from the annual population survey show 24% of the population exceeds the 15” minimum length limit. The number of fish just below the 15" minimum length limit remains high and, if mortality rates can be reduced for bass > 15”, the large number of smaller bass (12” – 14”) should further improve the size structure of the fishery in the coming year. The body condition for all sizes of bass remained relatively stable. Bass fishing should be fair to good in 2017 with most keeper fish ranging from 15” – 17” in length and weighing between 1.6 – 3.3 pounds. Site Regulation: 6 fish/day; 15" minimum length limit.

WALLEYE

Fair

The size structure and size of the walleye population improved for the third year in a row. Four year classes were collected in this year’s survey, and the catch rate improved. The size structure of the population remains good, and with many fish in the 2 – 5 lb. range, this lake should provide quality fishing opportunities for walleye in the coming year. Site Regulation: 6 fish/day.

WHITE CRAPPIE

Good

The white crappie population showed some improvement in the past year. The population is still dominated by a strong year class of 8” – 9.5” fish. All sizes of fish were in good condition. The percentage of fish over 10” in length improved over the past year too, and if growth rates remain good for the large year class of smaller fish, the size structure of the population should improve further in the coming year. For the spring of 2017, most keeper fish will range from 9” – 10.5” in length and weigh from 0.5 – 0.7 lbs with a few larger fish up to 14”. Site Regulation: White, Black, or Hybrid Crappie: 25 fish/day collectively.
